Fulham vs Manchester United History

These two know each other very well, and a large number of players have been fielded by both Fulham and Manchester United, including Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar, Bulgarian attacker Dimitar Berbatov, England international full-back Paul Parker, centre-back Chris Smalling, striker Andy Cole, and Frenchman Louis Saha.

Perhaps the most famous player to represent both clubs is Northern Ireland star George Best. The Belfast-born winger was discovered by Manchester United at the age of 15, and he went on to play 470 times for the club, scoring 179 goals. In the process, he won two domestic titles and the 1968 European Cup before leaving in 1974.

In 1976 he moved to Fulham and showed a brief return to form over the course of his two seasons at the club before he left for the US.

Fulham vs Manchester United Head to Head

The first time these two teams met was way back in March 1908 when Fulham emerged victorious in a 2-1 FA Cup clash. The first Premier League encounter at Craven Cottage took place in December 2001 when Ryan Giggs gave the away side an early lead, and Ruud van Nistelrooy doubled the advantage.

Sylvain Legwinski cut the gap just before the break, but Giggs scored his second and United’s third two minutes into the second half, and Steve Marlet’s late goal wasn’t enough to prevent a 3-2 loss for the West London outfit.

That was the first league meeting between the two teams in 25 years, though FA Cup clashes were commonplace.

In March 2009, Danny Murphy and Zoltan Gera both scored to give Fulham their first home league win over Manchester United in 45 years, though they were certainly helped by the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson saw both Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney sent off.

December 2011 saw Manchester United thump Fulham 5-0 on their own patch, with Danny Welbeck, Nani, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, and Dimitar Berbatov all finding the back of the net.

In 2022/23, Manchester United got the better of Fulham on three occasions, including an FA Cup success. The Craven Cottage meeting resulted in a last-gasp win for Erik Ten Hag’s side, with Christian Eriksen having put United ahead and former Old Trafford winger Daniel James scoring on the hour with Argentine youngster Alejandro Garnacho coming off the bench to score a 90th-minute winner.
