Fulham FC vs Nottingham Forest History

The first-ever clash between these clubs came back in 1905, in the Second Round of the FA Cup. Fulham were victorious on this occasion, by a single goal to nil, before being defeated in the following round by eventual champions Aston Villa.

Fulham and Nottingham Forest met 50 times in the old Second Division before eventually sharing a pitch in the English top flight, for the first time, in 1959.

In the early 70s, both clubs were back in the second tier of the Football League. They faced off in the 1975 FA Cup. This Fourth Round tie required three replays before Fulham won by two goals to one at The City Ground.

This came just a few years before Forest enjoyed its most fruitful period in the club’s history. Under manager Brian Clough, Forest became champions of the First Division in 1978 before winning the European Cup (precursor to the UEFA Champions League) in back-to-back seasons.

Forest also won the League Cup in 1978 and retained the trophy the following year. Towards the end of Clough’s 18-year spell at the helm, his team won the League Cup twice more.

Meanwhile, Fulham had yet to celebrate a first major trophy come the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Very few players have played for both these clubs, particularly in recent years. Anthony Knockaert joined Fulham on a permanent deal in 2020, before heading out on loan to Forest just three months later.

Andy Cole is best known for scoring 187 goals in the Premier League, having played for seven different clubs in the competition. He spent the 2004/05 season at Fulham and then played for Forest in the EFL Championship, immediately before ending his playing career in 2008.

Fulham FC vs Nottingham Forest Head-to-Head

There have been more than 100 on-field meetings between these two clubs, with the majority of those coming outside of the English top flight.

Fulham and Forest met in the Championship as recently as 2021/22. The visitors won this fixture by a single goal to nil, though it wasn’t enough to stop the Cottagers from being crowned champions and securing automatic promotion to the top flight. Forest later won the promotion play-offs to achieve Premier League status for the first time since 1999.

During the 2022/23 season, these teams contested a Premier League fixture for the first time ever. It was also 55 years since Forest had last visited Craven Cottage for a top-flight encounter as Fulham won this fixture, 2-0.

In 2004/05, the reverse fixture produced a six-goal thriller in the fourth round of the League Cup. Ex-Manchester United and England striker Andy Cole rounded off the scoring in a 4-2 victory for Fulham.
