History of The City Ground

The City Ground has been the home of Nottingham Forest Football Club ever since the venue first opened back in 1898, making it one of the oldest active stadiums in English football.

The highest attendance for a game at the City Ground was 49,946, versus Manchester United in October 1967.

The capacity of the ground was reduced following the Taylor Report of 1990, which ordered English football stadiums to replace standing terraces with all-seated areas instead.

Nowadays the City Ground has a 30,445 capacity, which was slightly below average of the 20 stadiums in the 2024/25 Premier League season.

City Ground Facilities

Of all the sections inside the City Ground, the Main Stand is the oldest but the smallest. The Main Stand was renamed in honour of Peter Taylor, assistant manager to Brian Clough, in October 2015.

Opposite is the Brian Clough Stand, which is the largest stand with approximately 10,355 seats. A two-tier structure, the stand was renovated in the mid-1990s and it includes executive boxes & hospitality areas.

The Trent End is behind one of the goals and can accommodate around 7,338 people. There is a vibrant atmosphere in this section owing to many of the club's most passionate supporters who are seated here.

The Bridgford Stand is opposite to the Trent End, with an estimated 7,710 seats. Away fans are seated in the lower tier of the Bridgford Stand.

Outside the stadium is a statue of Brian Clough who, as most Forest fans will know, played an integral part in the club's rich history. Clough was Nottingham Forest manager for 18 years and he famously guided NFFC to the old First Division league title in 1978 as well as two European Cups.

Popular Events at The City Ground

NFFC fans eagerly look forward to the East Midlands derby against Derby County, however this fixture hasn't occurred in the top flight since the 1998/99 Premier League campaign.
