Radiohead History
Radiohead were formed in the late 1980s in Oxford, and they released their debut album, Pablo Honey, in 1993 and was a moderate success, reaching the top 40 in both the UK Charts and the Billboard charts in the United States.
The Bends
It spawned the hit single Creep, but that success did not prevent Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'Brien, Colin Greenwood, and Philip Selway from reinventing themselves and releasing the critically acclaimed second album, The Bends, which went to the top ten in the UK and went on to sell over one a half million copies in the US.
Riding the Britpop Wave
It would be fair to say that Radiohead rode the Britpop wave alongside the likes of Oasis, Blur, The Verve, and Pulp, but they never really fit the mould that these other bands were, and it became very clear that Thom Yorke and his bandmates were keen to distance themselves from the Laddish excesses of that era.
Two years later, their seminal work, OK Computer, was released and has widely been accepted as a modern classic and considered one of the best albums of the modern era.
Ok Computer
It gave the band their first UK number-one and has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.
The album was seen as the band moving away from the Britpop sound and saw the band mature into a unique act.
The album included three top ten UK singles, with Paranoid Android, Karma Police, and No Surprises doing well in the charts.
Consolidating Their Success
Rather than resting on their laurels, Radiohead have continued to excel with subsequent albums Kid A, Amnesiac, Hail to the Thief, and In Rainbows, all topping the charts in the UK and proving a massive success around the world.
A Moon Shaped Pool
A Moon Shaped Pool was released in 2016 and was the band's first studio album in five years and proved a commercial and critical success.
The band supported that album with an extensive tour that covered two years and saw them headline Glastonbury for a third time.
New Ventures
Members of the band have since moved on to individual projects, with Jonny Greenwood working on film soundtracks, winning Oscar nominations for his work on Phantom Thread and The Power of the Dog.
Thom Yorke also experimented with this form of musical output, working on Suspiria in 2018.
Award-Winning
Over the years, Radiohead have won a host of accolades, including six Grammy Awards, and in 2019, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
