AC Milan vs Inter Milan History

AC Milan was founded towards the end of 1899, making it one of Italy's oldest football clubs. An internal dispute at the club led to the formation of Internazionale in 1908, and the two teams met for the first time the following year as AC Milan claimed a 3-2 victory over their newly-formed rivals.

The Rossoneri were mostly dominant in the early years of the Milan derby, though Inter began to turn the tide following the end of WWI.

Despite being three-time champions of Italy at the time of Inter’s founding, AC Milan went more than 40 years without ascending to the throne again until eventually winning the Serie A for the first time in 1951.

The 50s saw this rivalry taken up a notch as the two clubs won six league titles between them. Both the Rossoneri & Nerazzurri subsequently claimed maiden European honours the following decade, first AC Milan in 1963 followed by Inter the following year. Inter retained the European Cup in 1965, with Spanish midfielder Luis Suárez playing a vital role in the team’s rise to the summit of Italian & European football.

Neither of these Milanese teams were particularly dominant in the 70s and 80s, though AC Milan embarked on its most successful period during the final decade of the 20th century. Spearheaded by the Dutch trio of Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten & Frank Rijkaard, AC Milan were crowned Serie A champions four times in five years. In addition, the Rossoneri lifted the European Cup, now called the UEFA Champions League, three times between 1988 and 1995.

AC Milan continued to build a world-class team into the 2000s, with the likes of Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf, and Andrea Pirlo just a few of the stars on show under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Inter had it all to do in swinging matters in their favour, and it took something special to knock AC Milan off their perch. The men in blue & black clinched five successive Scudetti from 2006-10, and the arrival of José Mourinho as Inter manager in 2008 led to the Nerazzurri becoming the first Italian team to win an elusive Treble (Serie A, Coppa Italia & Champions League) in the 2009/10 season.

Inter Milan won the Italian top flight for a 19th time in 2021, becoming only the second Italian club to achieve this feat. The following year saw AC Milan equal this tally as the Rossoneri claimed a first league title since 2011.

AC Milan are the more decorated Milanese club in terms of European silverware, having won seven European Cup / Champions League titles compared to three for their neighbours, as of the end of the 2022/23 season.

Inter reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2023, but ultimately lost to Premier League giants Manchester City.

Milan Derby Stats & Mutual Connections

Former AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko netted 14 goals in 20 matches against Inter, and thus he is the highest-scoring player in the history of the Milan derby. Giuseppe Meazza, after whom the San Siro is officially named, scored 12 goals for Inter against AC Milan.

• Roberto Baggio signed for AC Milan in 1995, having made 200 appearances for Juventus. The Rossoneri won the Scudetto during Baggio's first season at the club, though the Italy forward would remain in Milan for just another year before leaving for Bologna. Baggio caused shockwaves when he became an Inter player in 1998, joining the rivals of two of his former clubs.

• Inter acquired Ronaldo Nazário in 1997, the Brazil striker aged 20 at the time. He subsequently set the Italian league alight and earned a €49m transfer to Real Madrid. Ronaldo moved to AC Milan in 2007, though he was limited to only a handful of appearances in red & black, before returning to his homeland.

• Similarly to his idol Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimović also played for both Milano clubs. The Sweden centre-forward joined AC Milan (on loan) in 2010, just a year after leaving Inter for FC Barcelona. Ibrahimović sealed a permanent switch to the red half of Milano and later had a second spell at the club, towards the end of his illustrious playing career. He went on to make a combined 280 appearances for AC Milan & Inter, winning five Scudetti overall.

• Turkey midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu spent four years at AC Milan and then completed a free transfer to rivals Inter in 2021.

AC Milan vs Inter Milan Head-to-Head

Having contested more than 230 official (competitive) meetings, there’s no love lost whenever these rivals share a pitch.

There’ve been a number of memorable editions of the Milan derby, including a seven-goal thriller in October 2006. Inter raced to a three-goal lead with Hernán Crespo & Zlatan Ibrahimović amongst the scorers. Clarence Seedorf & Kaká each scored to reduce the deficit, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Inter from earning a precious 4-3 win.
