Fulham FC vs Aston Villa History

The first time these clubs met was at the quarter-final stage of the FA Cup in 1905. Aston Villa stormed to an astounding 5-0 victory at Villa Park, before going on to capture the trophy for the fourth time.

More than three decades went by before the teams first contested a league fixture, as this came in the 1936/37 season of the old Second Division. In 1949, they clashed in the First Division for the first time.

Fulham and Villa frequently shared a pitch in the top division of the Football League for much of the 1960s, before they were both relegated towards the end of the decade. They continued battling one another into the 70s, until Villa achieved promotion to the First Division in 1975.

In 1999, these teams met for the first time in 24 years. Despite being outside of the English top flight at the time, Fulham were the victors when they faced Villa in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup. The Cottagers were knocked out the following round to eventual winners Manchester United.

• Kieran Richardson is best known for his stints with Manchester United and Sunderland, though the former left-back represented both Fulham and Villa for two years apiece before retiring in 2016.

• Ross McCormack joined Villa from Fulham in a £12m deal in 2016. The former Scotland striker made just 24 appearances for the Villains and had four loan spells away from the West Midlands before he was released in 2019.

In the 2001/02 season, these teams met in the Premier League for the very first time. This came after Fulham had returned to the top flight following a 33-year hiatus away from the highest level of English football.

This fixture has produced some entertaining battles over the years, including a 3-3 draw at Craven Cottage in 2005/06, and a 2-2 stalemate in 2010/11.

As recently as 2017/18 were Fulham and Aston Villa both playing in the EFL Championship. They clashed in the play-off final at Wembley, as Tom Cairney scored the only goal of the contest to send Fulham back up to the Premier League.
