Fulham FC vs Wolverhampton Wanderers History

The 1907/08 season hosted the first-ever fixtures between these clubs, in the old Second Division. For the next two decades (minus the First World War), Fulham and Wolves continued to contest their battles in the second tier.

The teams’ first meeting in the FA Cup came in 1921. A Third Round tie at Craven Cottage, Wolves won 1-0 on their way to reaching the final. Wolves ultimately lost to Tottenham, by a single goal to nil, at Stamford Bridge.

In 1949/50, Fulham and Wolves clashed in the top flight for the first time. This came more than 20 years after they had last shared a pitch in 1928.

They clashed frequently during the 1960s, before Fulham were relegated to the Second Division in 1968. Eight years later, Wolves also dropped down to the second tier and thus picked up where they left off with the Cottagers.

Wolves dipped in and out of the First Division, while Fulham spent 33 years away from the top flight. The clubs even met in the Third Division during the 1988/99 season.

In 1995, they were drawn together in the second round of the League Cup. Wolves were victorious in both legs, winning 7-1 on aggregate. The men in orange and black advanced to the quarter-finals, but lost out to West Midlands rivals and eventual champions Aston Villa.

Fulham reached the last-eight of the League Cup in 2000/01, having beaten Wolves in the third round, but were defeated by eventual winners Liverpool at Anfield.

• Former Portugal international Ivan Cavaleiro left Wolves for Fulham in 2019, on an initial loan deal, before completing a permanent switch to the London-based club the following year for a reported fee of £15m.

• In 2023, Mexico striker Raul Jiménez moved from Molineux Stadium to Craven Cottage in a £5m deal, while Spain winger Adama Traoré moved in the same direction on a free transfer.

These clubs contested a maiden Premier League encounter during the 2003/04 campaign. It was also their first clash in the top flight for 36 years.

In 2011/12, Fulham claimed a resounding victory in this fixture by five goals to zero; USA legend Clint Dempsey scored twice while Pavel Pogrebnyak bagged a hat-trick at Craven Cottage.

Fulham and Wolves fought it out in the EFL Championship as recently as the 2017/18 season, in which both teams were promoted to the Premier League; Wolves as league champions and Fulham via the play-offs.

In April 2021, Adama Traoré scored deep into stoppage time for Wolves to win a top-flight fixture at Craven Cottage for the first time since 1967.
