Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Burnley History

This is a particularly special fixture, as it contains not one but two founding members of the Football League back in 1888. Wolves and Burnley have shared a pitch on more than 130 occasions.

Burnley won the FA Cup for the first time in 1914, by which time Wolves had already won the trophy twice. The Clarets, however, were the first of these two clubs to win the old First Division title in 1921.

Wolves became a dominant force in English football during the 1950s. The West Midlands outfit won the league three times in this decade, including back-to-back successes in 1957/58 - 1958/59. The very next season, Burnley were league champions while Wolves lifted the FA Cup for a fourth time.

At the end of the 2022/23 season, neither club had won a trophy since Wolves captured the League Cup in 1980.

This fixture has a unique characteristic in that these teams have met at all levels of the Football League – including the fourth tier towards the end of the 80s.

Wolves and Burnley were both playing in the second tier around the turn of the 21st century. More recently, they clashed in the 2015-16 season of the EFL Championship.

• Wolves signed Scotland striker Steven Fletcher in 2010, having paid a club record fee worth £8m to Burnley.

• Sam Vokes made just 59 senior appearances across a four-year spell with Wolves. He switched directly to Burnley in 2012, for a modest transfer fee of £350k, and went on to amass more than 250 appearances for the Clarets. Vokes also earned 91 caps for Wales.

• Nathan Collins' move from Burnley to Wolves in 2022, worth an estimated £20,5m, became the most expensive transfer for a Republic of Ireland player.

Their first five meetings all went the way of Wolves with an aggregate score of 22 goals to four. Burnley finally earned a first win over these opponents in 1890, with a 4-2 victory at Turf Moor.

Only in 1970 – more than 80 years after their first-ever clash – did Wolves and Burnley finally contest a fixture in the FA Cup. The Clarets won this Third Round tie, 3-0, but they subsequently lost in the following round to eventual champions Chelsea.

In 2009/10, Wolves and Burnley met in the Premier League for the first time. This came more than three decades after they had last shared a fixture in the English top flight.

After Wolves returned to the Premier League in 2018, they beat Burnley in this fixture thanks to Raul Jiménez scoring the only goal of the match.

The 2020/21 season saw Burnley earn a stunning 4-0 victory at Molineux Stadium, featuring a hat-trick for Chris Wood. The Clarets thus recorded a league double over Wolves for the first time since 1957.
