Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Everton FC History

This is a special encounter as it features two founding members of the Football League. These clubs met in the first edition of the First Division, back in 1888/89, as Wolves were 5-0 winners of this fixture.

Wolves and Everton contested the FA Cup final in 1893. The former won by a single goal to nil and lifted the trophy for the first time.

The teams continued to battle one another regularly until 1906 when Wolves were relegated to the Second Division.

They clashed in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 1921 and again in 1939, with Wolves victorious on each occasion. They went on to reach the final both times, albeit losing efforts to Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth.

Wolves and Everton continued to meet frequently in the top flight following WWII, and Wolves embarked on their most successful period during the 1950s and 60s which produced three First Division championships and a fourth FA Cup title for the West Midlands club.

While Everton remained a constant fixture in the First Division, things took a turn for the worse for Wolves in the 1980s. Financial turmoil was a contributing factor to the men in orange and black suffering three consecutive relegations which saw them compete in the Fourth Division in 1986/87 as well as the following campaign.

This meant Wolves and Everton subsequently went two decades without clashing in a league fixture.

A handful of players have worn the colours of both these teams, notably:

• Former Scotland striker Andy Gray transferred from Wolves to Everton in 1983. The Toffees paid a reported fee of £250k for his services.

• Joleon Lescott emerged from the Wolves Academy and made his senior debut for the club in 2000. He switched to Everton in 2006, for a total transfer fee in the region of £5m.

• Darron Gibson graduated from the Manchester United Academy and he was sent out on loan to Wolves for first-team exposure during the 2007/08 season. It was around this time the midfielder earned the first of his 27 caps for Republic of Ireland. Upon leaving Man Utd in 2012, Gibson signed for Everton.

• Conor Coady joined Wolves in 2015, a year after leaving boyhood club Liverpool. The England defender amassed more than 300 appearances for the West Midlands outfit before completing a loan move to Everton for the duration of the 2022/23 campaign.

Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Everton FC Head-to-Head

In 2003/04, the teams contested a Premier League match for the first time. Wolves won this fixture but couldn’t avoid relegation to the EFL Championship, just one year after securing promotion via the play-offs.

Wolves achieved promotion again in 2018, as winners of the Championship, following a six-year absence from the top flight. Following their return, they met Everton on the opening day of the league campaign; it ended 2-2, with Ruben Neves and Raul Jiménez on the scoresheet for the home side while Richarlison netted twice for the Toffees.

Jiménez was also on target when Wolves beat Everton, 3-0, during the 2019/20 season, and again in 2021/22 as Wolves earned a 2-1 victory.

In 2022/23, Yerry Mina equalised deep into stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for the visitors after Hee-chan Hwang had put Wolves in front.
