Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Newcastle United History

The first on-field meeting between these clubs came towards the end of the 19th century, in the 1898/99 season of the First Division. Wolves were a founder member of the Football League meanwhile, for Newcastle United, this was their first-ever campaign in the top division of English football.

Wolves won this clash at St. James’ Park, by four goals to two, and it wasn’t until their fifth meeting that Newcastle beat their opposition in this fixture.

During the 1900s, the Magpies generally came out on top versus Wolves before the latter succumbed to relegation to the Second Division for the first time in 1906.

Just two years later, Wolves defeated Newcastle in the FA Cup final. This despite the Tyneside club competing towards the upper end of the top flight, with Wolves lower down in the second tier at the time.

Newcastle responded by winning the First Division for a third time, before capturing the FA Cup for the first time in 1910.

Both teams enjoyed success in the early-to-mid 20th century, particularly in the 50s. In this decade alone, Wolves were champions of England on three occasions, while Newcastle thrice won the FA Cup.

Wolves celebrated a maiden League Cup success in 1974 and lifted the trophy again six years later.

2003 was another historic year at Molineux Stadium, as Wolves achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time after almost two decades away from the English top flight.

Earlier in the Premier League era, Newcastle challenged for the title during the 1995/96 season. However, Kevin Keegan’s side ultimately fell short to Manchester United under Alex Ferguson.

In 2021/22, Hee-chan Hwang scored twice as Wolves picked up a 2-1 victory in this fixture. It was the first time since 1977 that the West Midlands club had beaten Newcastle in a top-flight encounter at Molineux.

In the 2022/23 campaign, these teams settled for a 1-1 draw as Allan Saint-Maximin scored in the 90th minute to cancel out Ruben Neves’s opening goal and salvage a point for the visitors.
