Newcastle United vs Manchester City History

These teams first met back in 1893 and, to date, Newcastle and Manchester City have shared a pitch close to 200 times.

Man City didn't collect all too many trophies in the early years of the Football League, winning a maiden First Division title in 1937. By this time, Newcastle were already four-time winners of the English top flight.

In more recent times, however, the Citizens have won silverware aplenty. The takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008 massively shifted the dynamics of English football. Significant cash injection saw Man City implement state-of-the-art facilities as well as big-money signings in the transfer market.

Newcastle United, too, were on the receiving end of financial backing from the Emirates in 2021, as the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund acquired an 80 per cent stake in the Tyneside club.

This fixture has therefore gained a lot of interest from observers in the UAE, with the Saudi-backed Newcastle United taking on Abu Dhabi-owned Manchester City.

Over the years, a handful of players have played for both the Magpies and the Sky Blues:

• Andy Cole joined Newcastle in 1993, not long after he was let go by Arsenal. The striker made his name during his time on Tyneside, leading to a British record £7m transfer to Manchester United in January 1995. Towards the end of his playing career, Cole signed for Man City in 2005, aged 33 at the time.
• Joey Barton made his senior debut for Man City in 2002, having risen through the club's youth teams. The midfielder appeared more than 150 times for the Sky Blues before he was sold to Newcastle in 2007.
• Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given spent the best part of a dozen years at Newcastle, making more than 450 appearances. He switched directly to Man City in 2009.
• Wales winger Craig Bellamy became a Newcastle player in 2001 and also went on to play for Celtic FC, Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool and West Ham United before moving to Man City in 2009.
• James Milner was just 18 when he left boyhood club Leeds United to sign for Newcastle in 2004. The versatile midfielder agreed to join Man City in 2010, from Aston Villa.
• Kieran Trippier emerged from the Manchester City Academy but left the club without featuring for the first-team. The England full-back had spells at Burnley, Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid prior to signing for Newcastle in 2022.

Newcastle United vs Manchester City Head-to-Head

Their first clash in the FA Cup was at the semi-final stage in 1924; Newcastle won 2-0 before defeating Aston Villa in the FA Cup final to win this trophy for the second time.

These teams met in this fixture on Boxing Day 2010. Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez both scored in the opening five minutes to guide the visitors to a 3-1 win.

More recently, the Magpies and the Citizens played out a thrilling 3-3 draw during the 2022/23 Premier League season. Former Man City youth product Kieran Trippier was amongst the six goalscorers at St. James’ Park, exquisitely converting a free-kick from 25 yards out.
