Newcastle United vs Aston Villa History

A large number of star players have been fielded by both Newcastle United and Aston Villa, and these include Irish keeper Shay Given, midfielder James Milner, winger Charles N’Zogbia, full-back Aaron Hughes, French wideman David Ginola, Peruvian Nolberto Solano, speedster Franz Carr and Stephen Ireland.

These two teams have met over 150 times over the years, with their first meeting coming in February 1895 with Aston Villa entertaining Newcastle United in an FA Cup tie and thumping their northeast visitors 7-1.

Aston Villa’s first visit to St James’ Park in the Premier League era didn’t end quite so well. It did start well for the away side, Stefan Beinlich scoring the opener after ten minutes, but it was all downhill from there.

Paul Bracewell leveled five minutes later, and a brace from Newcastle United legend Peter Beardsley and goals from Andy Cole and Scott Sellars gave the team an impressive 5-1 victory. A result that was repeated on the opening day of the 2023/2024 season.

In August 1999, Aston Villa secured their first away win against Newcastle United in the Premier League, with Julian Joachim scoring the only goal of the game five minutes after Alan Shearer had been sent off.

Perhaps the most infamous fixture between these two came in April 2005 when Newcastle United well and truly hit the self-destruct button. Juan Pablo Angel gave Villa the lead after five minutes, and then disaster struck when Steven Taylor comically handled on the line and was sent off before Gareth Barry buried the spot-kick.

The midfielder scored a second penalty five minutes later, and then the fun really began when Newcastle United midfielders Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer started a punch-up in the middle of the park, and players from both teams tried to calm matters before referee Barry Knight unsurprisingly sent both players off to leave the home side down to eight men.

It was a different story in August 2010 when Newcastle United thumped Villa 6-0 thanks to a hat-trick from Andy Carroll, two from Kevin Nolan, and a Joey Barton opener.

Eddie Howe guided Newcastle United back into the top four in 2022/23, during which his side hosted Aston Villa in October 2022 and eased to a win thanks to a brace from Callum Wilson and further efforts from Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.
