Newcastle United vs Brentford History

Though these two teams haven’t played each other that often and are geographically a long distance apart, a few players have still represented both teams, including forwards Carl Cort, Les Ferdinand, and Ivan Toney.

England international Toney was signed by Newcastle United in August 2015 but only managed two league appearances before he was sold to Peterborough in August 2018 after a series of loan spells around the country.

Brentford then purchased the forward in August 2020, and he has gone on to be a prolific marksman for the team.

Matches between Newcastle United and Brentford had been few and far between prior to the West London side’s rise to the Premier League in recent seasons. Indeed, when the two met at St James’ Park in November 2021, it was the first time they’d met since a run-in at the Championship level five years earlier, and the gaps between fixtures then get progressively less and less common.

Their first meet was in 1934, with Brentford securing an impressive 5-2 win away from home; they met once again just after the Second World War and then had to wait almost 50 years for another domestic league encounter.

That came in March 1993 in Football League Division One. Kevin Keegan’s side did not hold back, and goals from David Kelly, Paul Bracewell, a brace from Lee Clark, and a fifth from Rob Lee gave Newcastle United a massive 5-1 win as they marched to the title and back into the top-flight.

Their first Premier League clash at St James’ Park was an entertaining one. Jamaal Lascelles scored the opener on ten minutes before Ivan Toney responded against his former club. Rico Henry then gave Thomas Frank’s side the lead before Joelinton leveled before the break.

Defender Lascelles then scored an own goal to give Brentford the lead before magical winger Allan Saint-Maximin made it 3-3 on 75 minutes.

The following season, in October 2022, Eddie Howe’s side went to town with Bruno Guimaraes scoring twice and goals from Jacob Murphy, Miguel Almiron, and an own goal from Ethan Pinnock helping Newcastle United to a 5-1 win, with Toney once again scoring against his former employers for the Brentford consolation.
