Newcastle United vs Brighton History

Newcastle United and Brighton have not played a massive amount of matches against each other, but a few players have represented both teams.

Keeper Steve Harper played for Newcastle United between 1993 and 2013, albeit racking up less than 200 appearances due to having played second fiddle to Shay Given for so long, and he also spent a loan spell at Brighton.

Strikers Leon Best and Dave Kitson also played for both teams, and former Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear played at Brighton whilst Chris Hughton managed both clubs.

These two teams have not played each other all that often, especially when you compare this fixture to other Premier League match-ups. Their first encounter took place in February 1930 in the FA Cup, with Newcastle United emerging as winners after a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Their next meeting was 30 years later when Newcastle United thumped the Seagulls 5-0.

The Toon Army haven’t always had it their own way. In 1982/83, Brighton drew with Newcastle United in the FA Cup Third Round before edging the replay at St James’ Park, and the south coast outfit went on to get to the final that year, drawing with Man United 2-2 before losing the replay 4-0.

The first Premier League match-up in the northeast came in December 2017, with both teams having gained promotion the season previously, and the two teams played out a goalless draw.

In 2018/19, Brighton won at St James’ Park, with Israeli midfielder Beram Kayal scoring the only goal of the game. September 2020 saw another Brighton win away, Neal Maupay scoring twice and Aaron Connolly also netting, with Yves Bissouma getting sent off in what was a surprise 3-0 win for the visitors.

In 2022/23, with Eddie Howe’s side securing a return to the Champions League placings, Deniz Undav opened the scoring by firing into his own net to give Newcastle United the lead in 22 minutes. Towering defender Dan Burn made it 2-0 just before the break before Undav found the net to half the deficit.

Two last-gasp goals from Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes made the scoreline more flattering.
