Newcastle United vs A.F.C. Bournemouth History

These two teams have had fairly disparate histories, which is unsurprising when you consider that the Cherries have not spent all that much time in the top division.

But there are plenty of connections between the two teams, chiefly due to the past associations related to Eddie Howe, who was appointed Newcastle United manager in November 2021, having previously been in charge at A.F.C. Bournemouth in two spells, one from 2008 to 2011 and another lengthier period between 2012-2020.

The former defender also played over 230 times for the south coast club prior to moving upstairs.

The first time these two sides met was in November 1963, and the first visit of A.F.C. Bournemouth to St James’ Park only happened a decade later when Newcastle United eased to a 2-0 FA Cup triumph.

The first league clash occurred in the 1989/90 season, and Newcastle United thumped their visitors 3-0 though Jim Smith’s side narrowly missed out on promotion as they lost out in the play-offs.

In 1991/92, Bournemouth finally tasted success at St James’ Park. Having drawn their FA Cup Third Round tie at Dean Court, they met in a replay 18 days later, where Gavin Peacock gave the home side the lead before Paul Wood equalized late on. Forward Andy Hunt put Newcastle United back ahead in extra time, only for Kevin Bond to level again, and the game went to penalties, with Harry Redknapp’s side taking the tie 4-3.

In March 2016, A.F.C. Bournemouth made their first trip to St James’ Park in the Premier League era, and Eddie Howe’s side pulled off an impressive win thanks to goals from Joshua King, Charlie Daniels, and a Steven Taylor own goal, with Ayoze Perez replying for Newcastle United in a 3-1 win for the Cherries.

In November 2017, with A.F.C. Bournemouth back in the top tier, they won at St James’ Park again, this time by a solitary Steve Cook goal in the 90th minute.

In 2022/23, the two teams drew their Premier League meeting at St James’ Park and then met again at the same venue two months later in the EFL Cup, where an own goal from Adam Smith saw Newcastle United go through.
