Aston Villa vs Chelsea History
In 1907, the first-ever meeting between these teams ended goalless at Villa Park. Over the years, Aston Villa and Chelsea have contested more than 160 competitive meetings, with most of these coming in the top tier of the English football pyramid.
Villa beat Chelsea, by three goals to one, in the 1920 FA Cup semi-finals before defeating Huddersfield in the final to lift the trophy for a sixth time.
Until the end of the 2022/23 season, these clubs had won the FA Cup a combined 15 times.

• Chelsea’s long-serving captain John Terry signed for the Villains on a free transfer, following a 22-year stay at Stamford Bridge. The ex-England skipper was later named assistant coach to then-Villa manager Dean Smith.
• Joe Cole, another England star of yesteryear, made more than 280 appearances for Chelsea across a seven-year spell in west London. The attacking midfielder later joined Villa on a free transfer in 2014, following stints with Liverpool and West Ham United.
• Tammy Abraham and Ross Barkley both moved to Villa Park on loan from Chelsea, in 2018 and 2020, respectively.
• In 2022, Chelsea signed teenager Carney Chukwuemeka from Villa for a reported fee of £20m.
• Moreover, ex-Chelsea player Roberto di Matteo was Villa manager for a brief period in 2016. The former Italy midfielder had also taken charge of the Chelsea senior team in 2012.

In 2000, these teams contested the FA Cup final at Wembley; it was the aforementioned Di Matteo who scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory for Chelsea.
10 years later, Villa and Chelsea met in the semi-finals of the same competition and at the same venue. The Blues asserted their dominance as Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard each found the net in a 3-0 victory, paving the way for Chelsea to overcome Portsmouth in the final.
In 2014, Fabian Delph scored the only goal in this fixture as the hosts came away with all 3 points. The Villains’ next league win over Chelsea wouldn’t come until May 2021 – a 2-1 victory courtesy of goalscorers Bertrand Traore and Anwar El Ghazi.
