Aston Villa vs Burnley History
As two founder members of the Football League, Aston Villa and Burnley go way back. Their first ever meetings came in the 1888-89 season, a 4-2 win in favour of Villa followed by a 4-0 triumph for the Clarets in the reverse fixture.
Not only do the clubs boast an eventful history, they have also had their fair share of mutual players over the years.
•Matt Lowton joined Burnley from Villa in 2015, a similar path followed by Ashley Westwood in 2017.
•Goalkeeper Tom Heaton left Turf Moor in 2019, moving to the Midlands in a transfer worth £8m.
•Former England international Gary Cahill joined Villa as a teenager but made his senior debut for Burnley in 2004, on loan from his parent club.

With over 120 meetings since 1888, there is no shortage of history and sentiment in this classic match-up.
Burnley's relegation from the First Division in 1976 meant they would go 33 years without playing against Villa in the league, until 2009 when they met in the Premier League for the first time.
In 2010, this fixture produced an explosive seven-goal thriller which saw Ashley Young, Stewart Downing, Emile Heskey and Gabriel Agbonlahor all amongst the goals in a 5-2 victory for the home side.
More recently, in 2019, the teams played out a 2-2 draw as Chris Wood's equaliser earned a point for Sean Dyche's side. Villa and Burnley shared a pitch in the penultimate round of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, a 1-1 stalemate at Villa Park, which ultimately saw the Clarets relegated following a six-year stay in the top flight.
They have also met several times in the FA Cup, most notably in the 1959 quarter-final replay in which the Villains won by two goals to nil courtesy of a Peter McParland brace. Villa lost out to eventual winners Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals.
