Aston Villa vs Newcastle United History
Their first two meetings both came in the FA Cup, just two years apart. Aston Villa beat Newcastle United in the early rounds in 1895 and went on to lift the trophy, before repeating this feat in 1897 to capture a third FA Cup crown.
Since then, the Villains and the Magpies have contested 170+ meetings, mostly in the top division of English football.
Both clubs have a fair bit of historical achievements in the form of silverware, though for much of the last three decades, neither of them have yet to truly challenge for titles.
Newcastle narrowly lost the 1995/96 Premier League to Manchester United, while Villa ended FA Cup runners-up in 2000 (to Chelsea) and again in 2015, to Arsenal.

Following the inauguration of the Premier League in 1992, Villa and Newcastle met in the second campaign of the remodelled First Division. The Magpies beat the Villains home and away, including a 5-1 win at St. James’ Park, as Andy Cole scored in both fixtures.
John Carew scored a hat-trick as the home side won this fixture, 4-1, in the 2007/08 Premier League season. More recently, in the 2016/17 EFL Championship season, these teams met in a league fixture outside of the English top flight for the first time post-WWII.
