Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur History
The 1903 FA Cup was the scene of the first-ever meeting between these teams. A quarter-final tie at White Hart Lane, Aston Villa won by three goals to two before crashing out in the last-four.
Villa and Tottenham met again the following year, once more in the FA Cup, as Spurs avenged themselves with a 1-0 victory at Villa Park.
All but a few of their 170+ meetings to date have been contested within the first tier of the English football pyramid.
Combined, these clubs won the First Division nine times before it was remodelled to the Premier League in 1992. Villa and Spurs have also celebrated 15 FA Cup successes between them (correct as of the end of the 2022/23 season).
Some players who have played for both these teams include:
- Ex-France winger David Ginola joined Villa in 2000, following a three-year spell in north London.
- Retired USA goalkeeper Brad Friedel made 260 Premier League appearances, with 114 coming in the colours of Villa and 50 for Spurs.
- During his formative years as a pro, England defender Kyle Walker moved to Villa Park on loan from Spurs.
- In 2011, Villa paid an initial £18m (a club record fee at the time) for Darren Bent, who had been sold by Tottenham to Sunderland two years earlier.
Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur Head-to-Head
During the Premier League era, there has been a mixed bag of results between these two teams. In the first season of the competition, Villa and Spurs were subjected to two goalless draws at Villa Park and White Hart Lane.
In early 1994, Villa knocked Tottenham out of the League Cup quarter-finals before going on to beat Manchester United in the final at Wembley.
More recently, towards the end of the 2021/22 season, Heung-min Son scored a hat-trick in this Premier League fixture as Spurs cruised to a 4-0 win at Villa.
In May 2023, goals from Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz gave the Villains a first league win at home to Spurs since New Year’s Day 2008. Unai Emery also oversaw the Midlanders complete a league double over their north London counterparts for the first time since 1995/96.
