Aston Villa vs Manchester City History

It was in 1899 when these clubs shared a football pitch for the very first time, as the Villans emerged 2-1 victors in this fixture.

In 1934, Manchester City cruised to a 6-1 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals. The Citizens went on to capture the trophy for a second time, after beating Portsmouth in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Four years later, Aston Villa & Man City reconvened in the FA Cup. AVFC won the quarter-final tie by three goals to two, but later lost in the semis to eventual winners Preston North End.

Fast forward to 2011 and these clubs met again in the world’s oldest cup competition. MCFC earned a convincing 3-0 win in the Fifth Round, with Yaya Touré & David Silva featuring on the scoresheet, on their way to winning the FA Cup for the first time in more than 40 years.

• In 2002, Peter Schmeichel completed a free transfer to Maine Road following a solitary season at Villa Park. The ex-Denmark goalkeeper had previously enjoyed an eight-year spell with Manchester United.
