These two teams know each other very well, coming to blows in league clashes and plenty of times in feisty cup affairs.
A large number of players have represented both teams, including combative midfielder Michael Brown, creative forward Paul Walsh, prolific marksman Clive Allen, Croatian defender Vedran Corluka, Paul Stewart, Emmanuel Adebayor, and full-back Kyle Walker.
The first time these two teams met came in 1909 when Tottenham pulled off a memorable 4-3 win away at the Hyde Road Football Stadium, which was then Man City’s home ground, and that result was seemingly a sign of things to come.
Of all the meetings between the two teams, perhaps the most famous came in April 2019 in the UEFA Champions League Semi-Finals. Mauricio Pochettino had secured a narrow 1-0 home win in the first leg clash, with Heung-Min Son netting late on, and came into the second leg with the tie delicately balanced.
A crazy opening to the second leg saw Raheem Sterling open the scoring for City after four minutes, only for Heung-Min Son to score in the seventh minute and again three minutes later.
Bernardo Silva made it 2-2 on the night after just 11 minutes, and Sterling put Pep Guardiola’s side 3-2 up after 21 minutes, and when Sergio Aguero made it 4-2 on the hour, it appeared that Manchester City would make it through to the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Then on 73 minutes, Spanish sub Fernando Llorente came off the bench to score, making it 4-3 to City on the night and 4-4 on aggregate, and Tottenham held on to qualify on away goals, leaving home fans at the Etihad Stadium stunned.
In April 2021, Man City achieved a measure of revenge for that night, beating Tottenham in the EFL Cup Final with Aymeric Laporte being the unlikely scorer of the only goal in a tight Wembley Stadium clash.
Tottenham have managed to come away from away matches against City with a fairly decent record of late. In February 2022, during Pep Guardiola’s 2021/22 Premier League winning campaign, Spurs picked up a 3-2 win with Harry Kane scoring twice and a third coming from Swedish wide-man Dejan Kulusevski. Indeed Antonio Conte’s side did the double of City that season.
In January 2023, Tottenham went in at the break two goals up, through Kulusevski again and Emerson, but a rejuvenated City came out fighting and roared back to triumph 4-2 through a Riyad Mahrez brace, a customary Erling Haaland strike and a goal from Argentine forward Julian Alvarez.
