Manchester City vs Crystal Palace History

Crystal Palace have been, to some extent, something of a bogey side for Manchester City of late. This isn’t to say that the Selhurst Park side have beaten City repeatedly, but they have certainly achieved more than most Premier League sides on their travels to the Etihad Stadium.

A number of players have been kitted out in both team’s colours, including keeper Carlo Nash, defender Kit Symons, creative midfielder Michael Hughes, forward Clive Allen, and winger Eddie McGoldrick to name just a few.

In the Premier League era, even during Man City’s most glorious period of success, Crystal Palace have been something of a thorn in the home team’s side.

In December 2018, Roy Hodgson’s South London side arrived at the Etihad Stadium and promptly pulled off a shock win against the eventual Premier League champions. Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the home side, but two goals in two minutes from Jeffrey Schlupp and an unstoppable volley from Andros Townsend put the Eagles ahead at the break.

Seven minutes into the second half Luka Milivojević slotted home a penalty to give Palace a 3-1 lead which was reduced with five minutes to spare by Kevin De Bruyne, with City unable to prevent a loss. The defeat was all the more incongruous given that Man City won every one of their other 18 home Premier League games in the campaign.

As if to prove that this was no shock, in October 2021, Crystal Palace repeated the trick, this time under Patrick Vieira. Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher scored the goals in a 2-0 win against a ten-man City side who had Aymeric Laporte sent off. It was one of only two home games Guardiola’s side lost in yet another Premier League title-winning success.

In August 2022, it looked as if lightning would strike again with an own goal from John Stones and a second from Palace defender Joachim Andersen giving Crystal Palace a 2-0 lead at the break. On this occasion, Pep Guardiola got his side back into the winning frame of mind with Erling Haaland netting a blistering second-half hat-trick and Bernardo Silva getting the other goal in a 4-2 comeback win.

Palace haven’t only restricted their wins at City to recent times. In their super successful 1990-91 campaign, when Steve Coppell’s side finished third in the top tier, they won at Maine Road 2-0 with goals coming via a Neil Pointon own goal and a second from Ian Wright.
