Stamford Bridge plays host to a relatively local derby as visitors from Selhurst Park make their way from South to West London in search of a three-point haul, something they have rarely achieved in recent years.

Eagles fans will hope to buck the historical trend and will cheer on Palace as they take on their big-spending rivals.

Chelsea vs. Crystal Palace History

Chelsea are in something of a transitory period. They’ve employed a number of managers in recent seasons, including a total of four who were at some point at the helm during 2022/23.

Blues supporters will feel that the investment in their squad of late hasn’t proven effective and, with a new manager in tow, will hope for a change in fortunes. Clearly, a team of Chelsea’s quality should not only be in or around the top four, they should be challenging for a Premier League crown to add to the five they secured between 2005 and 2017.

Crystal Palace, on the other hand, have very much cemented their place in the top tier and are now looking to make ground on the top ten.

Having secured promotion to the Premier League in 2013/14, they will have set their goal to remain there for a prolonged period, in marked contrast to earlier stints, and they have certainly achieved that.

Following Roy Hodgson’s arrival in March 2023, Palace secured a laudable 11th-place finish, their best since 2018, and Palace will look to use this as the basis for a renewed push up the table.

Chelsea vs. Crystal Palace Head to Head

Crystal Palace don’t have the best of records at Stamford Bridge. They lost seven on the bounce between 2018 and 2023, on almost every occasion failing to score a single goal on their travels.

In January 2023, a Kai Havertz goal won it for Chelsea, and in 2021/22, the home side triumphed twice. Firstly securing a 3-0 win in August and then a 2-0 FA Cup success in April coming at Wembley Stadium in the semi-finals.

In October 2020, a pair of penalties from Jorginho, as well as efforts from Ben Chilwell and Kurt Zouma, gave Chelsea a healthy 4-0 win over their visitors.

You have to go back to April 2017 to search for a Crystal Palace win at Chelsea, and on that occasion, they even fell behind to a Cesc Fabregas goal in the fifth minute, which resulted in the Eagles bursting into life, leveling four minutes later through club legend Wilfried Zaha and going ahead in the 11th minute through Belgian forward Christian Benteke.

Though these two have met each other on countless occasions, there was a period of almost half a century, between 1924 and 1970, when the two didn’t play each other in league action.
