When two London-based clubs meet, fireworks can usually be expected on the pitch come game-time and Chelsea vs West Ham United never fails to disappoint. The Blues and the Hammers go at each other with everything they have got as nobody wants to be on the end of a derby defeat.
The Blues have become one of the most decorated clubs in English football over recent decades, as they have lifted at least five Premier League titles, as well as being hugely successful in European football.
West Ham may not be decorated in club honours, however, they have proven to be more than a match for some in the Premier League over the years, and with some financial backing, they have started to try and compete with those in the top half of the division, rather than continually flirt with relegation.
The 41,837 capacity Stamford Bridge has become a legendary stadium over the years, perhaps becoming known for just how well the Blues play there and how difficult it has been for visiting sides to come away with a positive result at times. The Hammers are one such side that has struggled in the past.
The Blues have been rather comfortable when playing in front of their own crowd against the Hammers, having rarely lost a game, although there have been a number of draws to have occurred.
Results have varied from 2-1, 3-0 and 4-1 in past meetings, going to show that goals can generally be expected, although there have been a fair share of draws to have taken place as well.
The likes of Diego Costa, Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard have all performed rather well for the Blues when going up against the Hammers in the past, although the Hammers have managed to provide their own household names in the form of Felipe Anderson, Declan Rice and Andriy Yarmolenko in recent meetings.
Two London sides are rarely ever going to like each other when they take to the field, and Chelsea vs West Ham United is one that is entrenched in some serious history. However, that helps to build the fixture as one that is hugely anticipated when it comes to the Stamford Bridge meeting and one that needs to be seen as a precedent for goals appears to have been set.
