The first meeting(s) between these clubs took place during the 1961/62 campaign, which happened to be the first season featuring Ipswich Town in the English top flight. ITFC beat Chelsea, 5-2, at Portman Road before the teams played out a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.
