Chelsea vs Aston Villa History

Aston Villa was founded in 1874, some 31 years before the formation of Chelsea FC. The Birmingham-based club was one of 12 founding members of the Football League and finished runners-up in the inaugural season of the competition in 1888/89.

The Villains enjoyed much success on either side of the turn of the 20th century, with six First Division titles as well as five FA Cup triumphs prior to WWI. Fast forward to the early 1980s and Aston Villa were crowned champions of England for the first time in more than 70 years. Led by manager Ron Saunders, Villa also won the European Cup for the first time the following year.

By this time, the only major honours in Chelsea's trophy cabinet were one First Division (1955), one League Cup (1965) and an FA Cup (1970). Things changed drastically following the turn of the century, as Roman Abramovich purchased the London side in 2003. A substantial cash injection saw Chelsea assert itself as a major contender in English football, and soon thereafter also on a European scale.

The Blues won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, as well as two UEFA Champions League and Europa League crowns apiece during the 19-year reign of the Russian oligarch.

Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital consortium completed a takeover of Chelsea FC in 2022, and the Blues have subsequently undergone a turbulent transition period. Heavy spending in the transfer market and multiple changes in management have seen Chelsea playing catch-up to the Premier League's leading clubs.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, have embarked on an upward trajectory since the appointment of Unai Emery as manager in November 2022. The Spaniard guided his charges to qualification for European football and then oversaw the Villains' climb further up the Premier League table in 2023/24.

• John Terry spent all but one year of his illustrious playing career at Chelsea, having joined the club aged 14. The ex-England defender made a massive 717 appearances for Chelsea before switching to Aston Villa on a free transfer in 2017, though he hung up his boots 12 months later to pursue a career in coaching.

• Joe Cole made more appearances for Chelsea (281) than he did for any other club. The attacking midfielder also played for Liverpool and West Ham United before signing for Aston Villa in 2014.

• Roberto di Matteo made more than 170 appearances for Chelsea during his playing days, and the ex-Italy international also took charge of the Blues on an interim basis in 2012. Di Matteo was later hired as Aston Villa manager ahead of the 2016/17 season, though he was dismissed within four months following a poor run of results.

• Ryan Bertrand, Tammy Abraham, Danny Drinkwater, and Ross Barkley all moved to Villa Park on loan from Chelsea between the start of 2014 and the end of 2020.

• Young midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka left Villa for Chelsea in 2022, worth a transfer fee in the region of £20m.
