Leicester City was founded in 1884, some 21 years before the birth of Chelsea FC. The clubs have quite contrasting backstories, with Leicester not boasting a particularly decorated history in comparison to their London-based opponents.
The Foxes only got their hands on a first major trophy in 1964, with success in the League Cup. This came just four years after the inception of the competition, as Leicester defeated Stoke City (4-3 on aggregate) in the two-legged final. LCFC had also beat West Ham United in the semi-finals. Chelsea won this title the following year, beating none other than Leicester City in the League Cup final. This was a second major honour for the Blues, who had previously conquered the First Division in 1955.
Chelsea have gone on to collect several more pieces of silverware, particularly in the 21st century and owing to the riches of former owner Roman Abramovich. The Russian billionaire was in charge of the club for the best part of two decades, during which time Chelsea won five Premier League titles and a handful of other prestigious trophies.
Leicester City, too, received significant cash injection with the 2010 takeover by the Thai-based King Power International Group. Improvements weren't as immediate as with the Chelsea takeover by Abramovich, but it didn't take too long for Leicester to leave their mark in the English game.
LCFC defied the odds to become Premier League champions in 2016, making it only the second different major honour in the club's trophy collection. The Foxes had been winners of the League Cup in 1997 and again three years later, but becoming the champions of England was (and still is) comfortably the club's most substantial achievement.
The East Midlands club subsequently played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time and spectacularly advanced to the quarter-finals. Chelsea won this competition for the first time in 2012 and again in 2021.
Several players, past and present, have been privileged enough to represent both of these famous clubs. Perhaps the first name that comes to mind would be N'Golo Kanté. The France midfielder joined Leicester from French side Caen in 2015, for a modest transfer fee of around £5m, and he played a vital role in the Foxes' historic 2015/16 campaign in which they won the Premier League title. Kanté then earned a £32m move to Chelsea and subsequently became a back-to-back Premier League champion less than 12 months later.
The following players also represented both CFC and LCFC:
• Former England midfielder Dennis Wise played 445 games for Chelsea before switching to Leicester City in the summer of 2001.
• Ryan Bertrand came through the Chelsea Academy and made more than 50 outings for the senior team before sealing a permanent switch to Southampton in 2015. The left-back signed for Leicester in 2021, but managed just a handful of appearances before he was released at the end of the 2022/23 season.
• Danny Drinkwater became a Leicester player in 2012 after struggling for first-team minutes with boyhood club Manchester United. He became a Premier League winner with Leicester, prompting Chelsea to purchase the midfielder for £35m in 2017. Poor luck with injuries and several loan spells away from west London meant Drinkwater was limited to just 23 games for CFC before he hung up his boots in 2023.
• Ben Chilwell was subject to a £50m transfer from Leicester to Chelsea in 2020. He has since gone on to play more than 100 times for the Blues, captaining the team on several occasions.
• Although not a player, Brendan Rodgers worked as a coach at Chelsea before pursuing a career in management away from Stamford Bridge. The Northern Irishman was appointed Leicester manager in 2019 and he guided the Foxes to FA Cup glory two years later, beating none other than Chelsea in the final at Wembley.
• Wesley Fofana completed a mega-money move from Leicester to Chelsea in 2022, worth in the region of £75m. The French defender put pen to paper on a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge.
These teams are most familiar with one another, having shared a pitch on more than 120 occasions.
Leicester scored a rare victory at Stamford Bridge in the 2000/01 Premiership season, as Muzzy Izzet netted against his former club and Stan Collymore also struck the target to secure 3 points for the Foxes.
In their 2015/16 title-winning season Leicester earned a 1-1 draw away to Chelsea, though Claudio Ranieri's team had already been crowned Premier League champions by the time of this fixture on the final day of the season. Remarkably, the Blues finished 31 points behind Leicester that year.
The teams contested the 2021 FA Cup final, in which Leicester City lifted this famous trophy for the very first time thanks to a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.
