Busted were formed in 2000 when James Bourne and Matt Willis failed in their auditions with other bands and chose to combine forces. Busted were originally a four-piece, but in 2001, when Charlie Simpson joined, they reverted to their tried and tested three-piece lineup.
Amazingly they appeared on the front cover of Smash Hits prior to having released a single, showing the level with which they had already grounded themselves into the mainstream.
They released their debut single, What I Go To School For, in September 2002, and it reached number three on the UK charts. two weeks later, their debut album came out.
Their self-titled debut album rose to number two on the UK Album charts and sold over two million copies worldwide and spawned further hit singles Year 3000, You Said No and Sleeping with the Light On.
As a boyband that played their own instruments, Busted neatly straddled two markets and their second album illustrated this with A Present for Everyone once again selling well, reaching number two in the UK Albums chart and again selling over two million copies.
Their second album contained no less than three number-one UK singles with Crashed the Wedding, Who's David, and Thunderbirds/3AM, all topping the charts, and Air Hostess reaching number two.
The band completed a successful arena tour following that release and saw out 2004 by winning Brit Awards for Best British Breakthrough Act and Best Pop Act, but then the band split in early 2005, with much of the tension in the band stemming from the fact that Charlie Simpson worked with his new act, Fightstar.
Solo projects followed for the three members of the band. Simpson continued to work with Fightstar, Bourne worked with new pop punk band Son of Dork while Willis went on to forge a successful television career.
A return for the band looked imminent after Matt Willis and James Bourne teamed up with McFly to form McBusted on a concert tour.
The band reunited in 2015 and have since released two new studio albums, Night Driver (2016) and Half Way There (2019), proving successful and drawing in a new audience to go with the fans they retained from their initial inception.
The band released a new Greatest Hits album in 2023 and scored another number-one album and combined with a number of famous names to record new versions of their hits, with the likes of Hanson, Neck Deep, Simple Plan, All Time Low, McFly, and the Jonas Brothers joining in the fun.
