Ipswich Town was founded in 1878, four years after Aston Villa had been established. AVFC was one of 12 members of the newly-formed Football League in 1888, and the Midlands outfit ended runners-up to Preston North End in the inaugural season of the competition.

Only in 1938 were ITFC elected to the Football League, by which time Aston Villa had been crowned winners of the First Division on six occasions. When the Villans captured FA Cup glory for the fifth time in 1957, Ipswich Town had only just returned to the Second Division under the management of Alf Ramsey. The Blues continued to rise and gained top-flight status for the first time in 1961, and what followed next was nothing short of remarkable.

Ipswich went on to clinch First Division honours at the first time of asking, finishing 3 points ahead of Burnley in the 1961/62 season. This remains the club’s only top tier league title, yet an astonishing achievement nonetheless. ITFC would later celebrate success in the FA Cup, as Bryan Robson’s side edged Arsenal, 1-0, in the 1978 FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Aston Villa vs Ipswich Town Head-to-Head

Villa Park was the venue for the first-ever meeting between these teams, in the Third Round of the 1938-39 FA Cup. A 1-1 draw meant the tie was to be decided in a replay at Portman Road, where the Villans ran out 2-1 winners.

Only in the 1959/60 Second Division campaign did the sides contest a league fixture. Just two years later Aston Villa & Ipswich Town clashed in the top flight for the first time, with both of them victorious in their home fixture.
