The first on-field meeting between these teams took place in the First Round of the 1905 FA Cup. Aston Villa ran out 5-1 winners at Villa Park and went on to capture the title for the fourth time. Leicester earned top-flight status for the first time in 1908 and subsequently contested a maiden league fixture against AVFC.
