Aston Villa vs Sheffield United History
These are two of England’s oldest and football clubs, whose first meeting occurred back in the 1893/94 Football League season.
Villa and its fanbase are extremely proud of their rich history. They were league champions five times towards the tail end of the 19th century and also celebrated a sixth FA Cup triumph in 1920.
The Villains have mostly been a permanent fixture in the Premier League, notwithstanding three seasons in the EFL Championship following relegation from the top flight in 2016.
Sheffield United are historic in their own right, having won the old First Division in 1898 as well as four FA Cup titles from 1899 until 1925. The Blades were part of the inaugural Premier League campaign in 1992/93 although they spent just one season in the newly-formed division before dropping down to the second tier.
After floating up and down the English football pyramid throughout the 2010s, Sheffield Utd gained promotion to the top flight in 2018/19 under manager Chris Wilder. The Blades finished 9th in their returning season before they were relegated again in 2020.
They once again achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2023, courtesy of a second-place finish in the Championship with Paul Heckingbottom at the helm.

Aston Villa vs Sheffield United Head-to-Head
These teams played out a captivating 3-3 draw in 2019, a fixture of great significance in the 2018/19 Championship campaign. Billy Sharp’s hat-trick had given the Blades a three-goal advantage but late goals by Tyrone Mings, Tammy Abraham and Andre Green rescued a point for the home side.
Going back to 2007, Martin O’Neill’s side swept away the Blades, 3-0, with Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young on the scoresheet. Sheffield Utd were famously relegated from the Premiership that season, succumbing to the drop by virtue of a single goal differential to Wigan Athletic.
Going even further into history, these teams contested a semi-final tie in the 1901 FA Cup which required a replay following a 2-2 draw at The City Ground. The Blades would go on to progress but they lost to Tottenham Hotspur, 1-3, in the final replay.
