History of St Mary's Stadium

The all-seater St Mary's Stadium opened its doors in August 2001, replacing The Dell as the home of Southampton FC. The Saints had been based at The Dell for more than a century, from 1898-2001.

The stadium has a 32,384 capacity, which was just above average of the 20 stadiums in the 2024/25 Premier League season. The highest recorded attendance at St Mary's Stadium was 32,363, versus Coventry City in April 2012.

St Mary's Stadium Facilities

The Itchen Stand is on the east side of the stadium, facing the River Itchen. This is the main stand with approximately 8,000 seats and it is primarily where hospitality seats and the Directors' Box are situated.

Running along the west side of the pitch is the Kingsland Stand which can accommodate around 7,710 people.

The Chapel Stand is stood behind the goal on the south end, and the Northam Stand is behind the other goal. The Northam Stand is where you'll generally find the more vocal Southampton supporters on matchday.

Away fans used to be seated in the Northam Stand until the start of the 2023/24 season when they were relocated to the corner of the Kingsland and Chapel stands.

Outside the St Mary's Stadium is a statue of club legend Ted Bates, who served as a player, manager, director and later president of Southampton FC. The sculpture was re-unveiled in March 2008, outside the Itchen Stand near the main entrance to the stadium.
