Burnley vs Sheffield United History

The first-ever clash between these clubs came in the First Round of the FA Cup in 1890. Sheffield United won this tie, 2-1.

Five years after the Football League was formed, Burnley and Sheffield Utd met in a league fixture for the first time. Either side won their home fixture in the 1893/94 season of the First Division.

They shared a pitch at Old Trafford in the FA Cup semi-finals of 1914; a goalless draw forced a replay at Goodison Park, where the Clarets claimed a narrow 1-0 victory.

Burnley subsequently reached the final and overcame Liverpool to capture their first (and so far only) FA Cup title. The following year, Sheffield Utd won this trophy for a third time.

Sheffield Utd beat Burnley in the Third Round of the 1936 FA Cup. The Blades progressed to the final, but were defeated by Arsenal.

The next time Burnley and Sheffield Utd clashed in the FA Cup, in 1962, the former emerged victorious in this quarter-final tie. The Clarets advanced to the final, but ultimately lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

In 1976, Burnley and Sheffield Utd were relegated from the First Division. Within four years, both teams had been relegated again and found themselves playing in the Third Division.

They met in the FA Cup, again, in 1993. Sheffield Utd made it to the semi-finals but were knocked out by local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

There are a handful of well-known players who have been involved with both these clubs:

• Gary Cahill made his senior debut in 2004, whilst on loan at Burnley from parent club Aston Villa. He later enjoyed a loan spell at Sheffield Utd before going on to earn 61 caps for England and win the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2012.

• Phil Bardsley had a brief spell on loan at Burnley from Manchester United in 2006, before joining Sheffield Utd on loan the following year. The former Scotland international later completed a long-term move to Burnley, where he spent five years before hanging up his boots in 2023.

• Sam Vokes played for both these teams during the 2011/12 season, on loan from Wolves. The Wales striker then signed for Burnley on a permanent basis and made more than 250 appearances for the Clarets.

• Sander Berge moved directly between these clubs in 2023. The Norway midfielder switched from Sheffield Utd to Burnley in a deal worth a reported £12m.

Burnley vs Sheffield United Head-to-Head

With more than 125 meetings behind them, these teams know each other rather well. However, the majority of their previous clashes came in the old First and Second Divisions.

They met in the 2009 Championship play-off final; Burnley were the winners at Wembley and thus earned promotion to the Premier League. For the first time since 1976, the Clarets had achieved top-flight status.

The 2019/20 Premier League season saw Burnley and Sheffield Utd contest a top-flight encounter for the first time in 43 years.

Both these teams were promoted to the Premier League ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. The previous season, in the Championship, this fixture ended 2-0 in favour of the Clarets.
