Burnley vs Everton FC History

This fixture contains not one but two founder members of the Football League, formed in 1888. These teams met in the inaugural season of the First Division and played out a 2-2 draw in this fixture. It was only in their sixth meeting that Burnley finally defeated Everton FC.

In 1892, the clubs clashed in the FA Cup for the first time. Burnley were victorious by three goals to one in this First Round tie which took place at Anfield, Everton’s home ground at the time.

They reconvened in the 1925 FA Cup as Everton won and advanced to the Second Round. The Merseyside outfit later crashed out to eventual champions Sheffield United.

Burnley and Everton have shared a pitch more than 120 times, though most of these were contested in the old First Division.

Everton were nine-time winners of the First Division before the competition reformatted to the Premier League in 1992. The Toffees also won the FA Cup for a fifth time in 1995.

Burnley won its first (and so far only) FA Cup title in 1914. The Clarets twice won the First Division, in 1921 and again in 1960.

Some well-known figures who have been involved with both these clubs:

• Paul Gascoigne is best known for his time with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and the England national team. Though not everyone is aware that the former midfielder also donned the badges of both Burnley and Everton towards the end of his playing career. Gascoigne joined the Toffees in 2000 and then signed for the Clarets two years later.

• Michael Keane switched to Goodison Park in 2017 as Everton paid a club record fee of £30m to Burnley.

• Aaron Lennon moved in the opposite direction the following year, bringing an end to his three-year stay on Merseyside.

• In 2022, Everton prised two players away from Burnley after the Clarets were relegated to the Championship. James Tarkowski was subject to a free transfer after six years at Turf Moor, while Dwight McNeil completed a move for a fee in the region of £20m.

• Sean Dyche took charge of 425 matches as Burnley manager until they parted company in 2022. He was then appointed manager of Everton the following year.

Burnley vs Everton FC Head-to-Head

Following the Clarets’ first-ever promotion to the Premier League in 2009, they earned a 1-0 win over Everton in the subsequent campaign. This was the first time these teams had faced one another for 33 years.

Burnley got the better of the Toffees at Turf Moor in back-to-back seasons (2016/17 - 2017/18) and again in October 2019.

In 2021/22, with both teams involved in a relegation scrap, Burnley won this fixture by three goals to two as Maxwel Cornet scored the winning goal. However, the Clarets ultimately failed to avoid the drop while Everton narrowly escaped relegation.
