Burnley vs Aston Villa History

This Premier League fixture pits two of England's oldest football clubs against one another. Burnley and Aston Villa share a long and esteemed history which goes all the way back to 1888. The teams met in the inaugural Football League season in which Villa went on to finish runners-up to champions Preston North End.

As founding members of club football in England, the Clarets and the Villans have crossed paths more times than your average fixture nowadays. They have faced off on more than 120 occasions, including a few tasty encounters in the FA Cup.

Given their prolonged days of old, it comes as no surprise that a handful of players have been privileged to represent both of these historic clubs.

•Gary Cahill, a 61-cap England defender, made his senior debut for Burnley whilst on loan from Villa in 2004.

•Matt Lowton and Ashley Westwood left Villa Park to sign for Burnley in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

• In 2019, Villa signed goalkeeper Tom Heaton from Burnley for a transfer fee of £8m.

Burnley vs Aston Villa Head-to-Head

Their first two meetings back in the 1888-89 season produced a combined 10 goals and there have been plenty of high-quality encounters between the teams over the years.

Burnley's status as a yo-yo club in the 21st century has meant the frequency of their clashes with Villa has been fewer than during their formative years more than a century ago. 2023/24 is just the sixth season both Burnley and Villa are playing in the English top flight since the Premier League era began in 1992.

In 2021 this fixture saw Sean Dyche's side earn a come-from-behind 3-2 win, courtesy of goals from Ben Mee, Dwight McNeil and Chris Wood.

These teams have also shared the pitch numerous times in the FA Cup. In 1924 they contested the semi-final which ended 3-0 in favour of Villa. They failed to capture the trophy, however, losing to Newcastle United in the final at Wembley.

In 1959, Burnley and Villa met again in the FA Cup and once more the latter came out on top in this quarter-final tie; they were then knocked out by eventual winners Nottingham Forest in the semis.
