The setting of the first-ever meeting between these clubs was a First Round tie of the FA Cup in 1896; Burnley were victorious by six goals to one.

The following year Burnley and Arsenal first contested a league fixture, in the old Second Division. Burnley stormed to a 5-0 win at Turf Moor before a stalemate in the reverse fixture, on either side of another FA Cup tie which Burnley also won.

In 1919/20 these teams shared a maiden meeting in the top flight of English football. Burnley beat the Gunners by two goals to one, on their way to being crowned First Division champions for the first time.

To date, these sides have met on 110+ occasions, mostly in the English top flight featuring a handful of clashes in the FA Cup and League Cup.

Arsenal beat Burnley in the Fifth Round of the 1950 FA Cup, before going on to reach the final at Wembley where they beat Liverpool by two goals to zero.

There is a very small pool of players who have played for both these clubs. The most notable name is Lee Dixon. The ex-England defender began his playing career at Burnley, having initially joined the club’s youth system at the age of 16 upon leaving school.

Dixon left Turf Moor in 1984 and signed for Arsenal four years later. He remained at Highbury for 14 years, winning multiple major honours in that time, before announcing his retirement from professional football.

In late 2009, these teams met in the top flight for the first time in more than three decades. This came after Burnley had achieved promotion from the EFL Championship to the Premier League.

In this fixture, the Clarets and the Gunners settled for a 1-1 draw after Cesc Fabregas had put the visitors in front.

More recently, on the final day of the 2018/19 league season, the Gunners won 3-1 at Turf Moor as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang notched two goals.
