Burnley vs Chelsea History

The first time(s) these clubs battled it out was during the 1905/06 season of the old Second Division. Burnley and Chelsea first met in the English top flight in 1913, and they clashed in the FA Cup for the first time in 1927.

The Clarets and the Blues have shared a pitch more than 100 times, though only a fraction of these have come in the 21st century.

Looking back, one of their most significant meetings was a Fourth Round tie in the 1970 FA Cup. A stalemate at Stamford Bridge forced a replay at Turf Moor, where Chelsea ran out 3-1 winners.

The west London club went on to reach the final at Wembley, but required a replay (at Old Trafford) to get the better of Leeds United.

Chelsea have been one of the most successful football clubs in England, particularly since the turn of the century. The Blues have won no fewer than five Premier League titles, as well the UEFA Champions League and Europa League twice apiece. In 2018, Chelsea won the FA Cup for an eighth time.

A handful of players have donned the badges of both these clubs, namely:

• Former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill made his senior debut whilst on loan at Burnley, from Aston Villa, eight years before signing for the Blues. The ex-England defender won multiple titles during his time at Stamford Bridge.

• Jack Cork was aged nine when he joined the Chelsea Academy in 1998. The central midfielder climbed through the youth teams at Cobham, though he never made an appearance for the senior team. Cork joined Burnley on loan during the 2010/11 season, after which he completed a permanent switch to Southampton. In 2017, he rejoined Burnley on a long-term deal.

• Ian Maatsen spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Burnley, as the Clarets won the EFL Championship to secure a return to the Premier League.

Burnley vs Chelsea Head-to-Head

In the 2009/10 Premier League campaign, these teams contested a fixture in the English top flight for the first time in 35 years. In this fixture, Nicolas Anelka and John Terry scored in a 2-1 win for Chelsea.

Chelsea scored a combined 15 goals past Burnley in this fixture, across four consecutive seasons from 2018/19 until 2021/22.

In late 2019, Christian Pulisic bagged a hat-trick at Turf Moor as the Blues won here by four goals to zero. There was an identical scoreline two seasons later, as Kai Havertz netted twice in quick succession in March 2022.
