Sheffield United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers History

The first time these clubs met on a football pitch was in 1892, in the FA Cup. This Second Round tie took place at Molineux Stadium, as Wolves won and went on to progress to the last-eight, but lost to eventual runners-up Aston Villa.

The first league meeting between Sheffield Utd and Wolves came in the 1893/94 season, five years after the Football League was established. A seven-goal thriller saw the Blades earn a slender victory at Molineux, followed by a 3-2 home win at Bramall Lane.

In the FA Cup of 1901, Sheffield Utd beat Wolves in the quarter-finals on their way to reaching the final for a second time, but they were ultimately beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.

When Sheffield Utd and Wolves next faced one another in the FA Cup, in 1928, the former had already lifted this trophy on four occasions.

In 1949, Wolves won the FA Cup for the third time. They defeated Leicester City in the final at Wembley, having earlier cruised past Sheffield Utd in the Fourth Round.

This was followed by Wolves’ most successful period to date. The West Midlands side won the First Division title three times in the 50s followed by a fourth FA Cup crown in 1960.

Sheffield Utd and Wolves continued to meet frequently in the top flight until 1976, when they were both relegated to the Second Division. In 1988, the teams contested a fixture in the third tier of English football for the first time.

There are a few players who have donned the badges of both these clubs in recent years.

• Sam Vokes was signed by Wolves in 2008. During his four-year association with the club, the Wales striker was subject to six loan moves away from the Molineux. This included a brief spell at Sheffield Utd in 2011.

• Former Scotland international Kevin McDonald completed a free transfer from Sheffield Utd to Wolves in 2013.

• Morgan Gibbs-White was just eight years-old when he joined the Wolves Academy in 2008. He climbed the ranks and made his senior debut in early 2017. The attacking midfielder spent the 2021/22 season at Sheffield Utd, where he gained heaps of first-team exposure, before switching to Nottingham Forest in a deal worth an initial £25m.

These teams met in the EFL Championship as recently as the 2017/18 season, in which Wolves won the league title and gained automatic promotion to the Premier League. This particular fixture ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts.

In 2019, Sheffield Utd and Wolves shared a top-flight fixture for the first time in 43 years, and their first-ever in the Premier League era. This also came only five years after they had both been playing in the third tier of the English football pyramid.

This fixture, together with many others, was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When it was eventually played, behind closed doors, the Blades snatched a 1-0 win thanks to John Egan’s goal deep into second-half stoppage time. The following season, Raul Jiménez scored in a 2-0 win for Wolves at Bramall Lane.
