These teams met for the first time in 1907, at Stamford Bridge. Eight years later, Sheffield United and Chelsea contested the FA Cup final at Old Trafford; the Blades won by three goals to zero to lift the FA Cup for a third time.
The clubs met again in the FA Cup in 1952, this time at the quarter-final stage. Chelsea were 2-0 victors but would lose to London rivals Arsenal in the semi-finals.

• Ethan Ampadu signed for Sheffield Utd on loan from Chelsea in 2020, three years after the Wales international had moved to Stamford Bridge aged 17.
