Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace History
These teams first met in the Third Round of the 1959 FA Cup. Sheffield United won 2-0 and progressed to the last-eight, but lost to Norwich City.
Sheffield Utd enjoyed its most successful period around the turn of the 20th century. The Blades won the First Division title in 1898 before capturing the FA Cup for the first time the following year. The Sheffield-based club has since collected three more FA Cup titles – in 1902, 1915, and 1925.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace does not boast any major silverware in its entire history (as of the end of the 2022/23 season). The Eagles finished runners-up of the FA Cup, twice losing to Manchester United at Wembley in the final of 1990 and again in 2016.
There are players who have played for both Sheffield Utd and Palace, and there are also some individuals who have managed both teams in question.
• Ex-Man United captain Steve Bruce took up a player-manager role at Bramall Lane for the 1998/99 season. He was later named Palace manager in 2001 but stepped down just a few months later.
• Neil Warnock was Sheffield Utd boss for more than seven years until 2007. He was appointed at Selhurst Park later that year and remained in the job until 2010. Warnock later returned to the Eagles for an unsuccessful four-month stint in 2014.
Sheffield United vs Crystal Palace Head-to-Head
In 1992/93, both teams took part in the inaugural Premier League season. The Eagles won home and away, with Gareth Southgate on the scoresheet at Selhurst Park.
Upon returning to the Premier League in 2019, the Blades met Palace in a top-flight meeting for the first time in 26 years. Both fixtures ended with the same result; a 1-0 win in favour of Sheffield Utd.
Palace were twice victorious over the Blades in the 2020/21 Premier League season, with Eberechi Eze hitting the target in both encounters.
Sheffield Utd again regained promotion in 2023 and hosted Palace on the first weekend of the new season. The visiting Seagulls secured a narrow 1-0 win, courtesy of Odsonne Edouard’s second-half goal.
