These two teams have played each other many times and have formed a fair amount of connections; here are a selection of players who have played for both Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Midfielder Jack Grealish was brought in from Aston Villa for a club-record fee and was something of a Villa Park hero before he made the switch. Then there’s midfielder Fabian Delph, England international stalwart Gareth Barry, James Milner, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards, Richard Dunne, and Peter Schmeichel, who have all plied their trade with both clubs.

These two sides have met over 150 times over the years, with their first meeting taking place in 1899. While in recent years it’s been Manchester City who have had the upper hand, that’s not always been the case.

In May 1979, Aston Villa edged City 3-2 at Maine Road, and during their 1980/81 title-winning campaign, manager Ron Saunders guided the club to a 2-2 draw away at Man City with Peter Withe scoring twice and Dennis Tueart and Ray Ranson responding for the hosts.

In December 1992, in the two team’s first Maine Road clash in the Premier League era, Garry Parker scored for Villa before popular midfielder Garry Flitcroft responded for Manchester City.

In March 2001, Shaun Goater gave Manchester City the lead, but Paul Merson, Dion Dublin, and Lee Hendrie scored for Aston Villa before Australian international Danny Tiatto was sent off for Manchester City late on.

During 2012/13, the two teams met three times, with Villa winning away in their Capital One Cup tie before being thumped 5-0 by Manchester City two months later in their Premier League clash, Argentine pair Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez grabbing two apiece and David Silva getting the other.

The May 2022 fixture is perhaps the most famous of recent Manchester City vs. Aston Villa clashes, with Pep Guardiola needing a win from the final game of the season to secure the Premier League title.

Incredibly goals from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho had Aston Villa leading 2-0 with just 15 minutes to play, meaning that Liverpool had their hands resting on the Premier League trophy.

However, German international Ilkay Gundogan, who had only just come on as a sub, scored twice, and Rodri got the other as Manchester City sneaked to a memorable 3-2 win to take the championship in dramatic circumstances.
