Tottenham Hotspur was formed in 1882, 10 years before the founding of Liverpool. Spurs won a maiden FA Cup title in 1901, the same year Liverpool were crowned First Division champions for the very first time.

Neither club enjoyed overwhelming success in the first half of the 20th century, though they both began to emerge as title contenders in the 1960s. • Liverpool acquired United States goalkeeper Brad Friedel during the 1997/98 season, though he mostly played second-fiddle during his time at Anfield, featuring just 31 times for the Reds. Friedel moved to Spurs in 2011, aged 40 at the time. He earned 82 caps for the USMNT before hanging up his gloves in 2015.
• Former Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane played more than 300 times for Tottenham. He had a brief spell at Liverpool in 2008/09 prior to a return to north London. Another striker who represented both these teams is former England international Peter Crouch.
