Tottenham Hotspur was formed in 1882, 10 years before the founding of Liverpool. Spurs won a maiden FA Cup title in 1901, the same year Liverpool were crowned First Division champions for the very first time.

Neither club enjoyed overwhelming success in the first half of the 20th century, though they both began to emerge as title contenders in the 1960s.
