The first on-field meeting between these clubs came in 1903, but it wasn’t until the 1977/78 season they clashed in the Football League for the first time.

Brighton dropped out of the top flight in 1983 and would remain away from the summit of the English football pyramid until 2017. During this time, these teams met just twice – once each in the FA Cup and League Cup.

When Brighton qualified for the Europa League in 2023, the club had yet to win a first major trophy.

Tottenham, meanwhile, won the old First Division twice and captured the FA Cup for an eighth time in 1991.

Mali midfielder Yves Bissouma switched to north London in 2022, in a £30m move away from the Amex Stadium. This came two decades after Bobby Zamora completed a £1,5m transfer from Brighton to Spurs.

In 2005, these clubs met in the FA Cup for the first time. Ledley King and Robbie Keane scored in this Third Round tie, a 2-1 win for Spurs at White Hart Lane.

A decade later, during the 2014/15 season, the Lilywhites knocked the Seagulls out of the League Cup on their way to reaching the final. Spurs ultimately lost to Chelsea at Wembley, by two goals to zero.

In 2017, Brighton and Tottenham met in the English top flight for the first time in 34 years. The Seagulls were victorious over Spurs in the 2019/20 Premier League season, and again the following term.

Harry Kane scored in this fixture in both the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns, as Spurs won on both occasions.
