Brighton & Hove Albion vs West Ham United History

These teams met for the first time in 1903. West Ham United ran out 4-0 winners at Upton Park, in a FA Cup qualifier. The Hammers progressed to the semi-finals that year, though they were beaten by eventual winners Everton.

Brighton and West Ham reconvened in the Fifth Round of the 1933 FA Cup. The tie ended all square, 2-2, and required a replay which West Ham won 1-0.

The Irons enjoyed some success in the 1960s and 70s, meanwhile Brighton were outside of the old First Division for much of the 20th century.

In 2022/23, West Ham celebrated success in the UEFA Conference League, while Brighton qualified for the Europa League with a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

Several players have played for both these clubs, notably:

•Bobby Zamora had two spells on the south coast (2000-03; 2015-16) on either side of spells with four London-based clubs – Tottenham, West Ham, Fulham, and QPR.

•Ex-England defender Wayne Bridge had loan spells at both Brighton and West Ham during his time at Manchester City.

•Another former England defender, Matthew Upson signed at Upton Park in 2007 and remained there for four years. He later joined Brighton in 2013.

The teams played out a 2-2 draw in the 2004/05 Championship, as Dean Hammond twice equalised for Brighton after Nigel Reo-Coker and Marlon Harewood had put the Hammers in front.

Their first clash in the Premier League came in 2017 and it ended in favour of the Seagulls. Glenn Murray scored twice in a 3-0 win at London Stadium.

In March 2023, Brighton cruised to a 4-0 win in this fixture with Alexis Mac Allister, Kaoru Mitoma and Danny Welbeck on the scoresheet. At the time it became the Seagulls’ biggest win over the Irons.
