Brighton & Hove Albion vs Brentford History

The first time these two teams took to the pitch was during the 1920/21 season of the old Third Division. Brighton and Brentford each won their home fixture and they would continue to meet regularly for much of the 1920s and into the 30s.

Their first FA Cup meeting came in 1928/29, as Brentford won this First Round tie by four goals to one.

After facing one another in 1933, the clubs wouldn't cross paths again for more than 20 years until they reconvened in the 1954/55 campaign of the Third Division.

From 1960-1992 they met only 12 times, with more than half of those coming in cup games as opposed to league fixtures.

Brighton were 1-0 victors when they faced Brentford in the Second Round of the FA Cup in 1974, and there was a similar result in the First Round of the same competition in 1987.

The teams shared a thrilling two-legged tie in the League Cup of 1991/92; Brentford won 6-5 on aggregate, including a 4-1 win at Griffin Park.

In 1993, after the Football League had reformatted, Brighton and Brentford met in the third tier of the league pyramid. In the 1998/99 season, they clashed in the fourth tier.

2014 was the dawn of a new era in the history between these teams, as they shared a pitch in the second tier (Championship) for the first time – almost a century after their first-ever meeting.

There are a few players have represented both of these clubs in recent years, notably:

• Steve Sidwell climbed the ranks of the Arsenal Academy before moving on loan to Brentford in 2001 and then Brighton the following year. The midfielder went on to make 200 Premier League appearances, featuring for the likes of Chelsea, Aston Villa and Fulham. Sidwell later returned to Brighton in 2016, steering them to Premier League promotion before retiring in 2018.

• Neal Maupay joined Brentford from French side Saint-Étienne in 2017. Two years later, Brighton signed the France junior international for a reported fee of £20m. Maupay rejoined Brentford in 2023, on loan from Everton.

This fixture produced a 3-3 draw in the 2022/23 season, as Alexis Mac Allister’s late penalty salvaged a point for the home side.
