Brighton & Hove Albion vs Liverpool History

These clubs met for the first time in the 1908 FA Cup, as Liverpool won the Second Round replay. Half a century passed before they shared a pitch again.

The 1979/80 season was the first time Brighton and Liverpool met in the top division of English football. The Reds were a strong force in the 80s, a decade which brought six First Division titles for the dominant team led by Bob Paisley and then Kenny Dalglish.

Brighton dropped out of the First Division in 1983 and would remain away from the top flight for more than 30 years. During that time, they clashed with Liverpool only in FA Cup and League Cup meetings.

Ex-England midfielder James Milner joined Brighton on a free transfer from Liverpool in 2023, three years after fellow countryman Adam Lallana did likewise.

Alexis Mac Allister went in the opposite direction, signing at Anfield in a transfer worth an initial £35m.

In 2012, Liverpool put six goals past Brighton in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup. Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez were both on target at Anfield and the Reds progressed to the final at Wembley, where Chelsea got the better of the Merseyside club by two goals to one.

The 2016/17 Premier League campaign saw Brighton and Liverpool meet in a league fixture for the first time in more than three decades. The Reds won by five goals to one on the south coast, with Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho amongst the goals for the visitors.

Kaoru Mitoma scored the winning goal as the Seagulls knocked the Reds out of the FA Cup Fourth Round in January 2023. Just two weeks earlier, Brighton had recorded a league win at home against Liverpool for the first time in 62 years.
