Liverpool vs Sheffield United History

Although Sheffield United are the older of these two clubs, it is Liverpool that has asserted itself as one of England's most decorated football teams.

Sheffield United was one of 12 founding members of the Football League in 1888 before being crowned First Division champions a decade later. The Blades also won a maiden FA Cup in 1899 and added three more titles by the end of 1925.

Liverpool, meanwhile, only truly rose to prominence in the mid-to-late 20th century as legendary managers Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley led the Reds to unbridled success both domestically and in Europe.

The Merseyside outfit has collected more than 50 major trophies to date, including 19 league titles and six European Cup/UEFA Champions League triumphs. The Reds have also won the FA Cup on on fewer than eight occasions, making them one of the most successful sides in the history of this famous competition.

The first meeting(s) between these teams came back in 1894, as they played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield followed by an identical scoreline at Bramall Lane.

Two of Liverpool's most beloved sons, Phil Thompson and Ian Rush, both switched to Sheffield United later on in their illustrious playing careers. Thompson, a 42-cap England defender, played 477 times for the Reds and picked up seven First Division titles as well as three European Cups, before moving to Bramall Lane in 1985. Rush amassed 346 goals in 660 appearances for Liverpool, as well as 73 outings for Wales, prior to a brief loan spell at Sheffield Utd towards the end of his playing career.

These teams have contested more than 130 competitive meetings, mostly in the top flight with occasional bouts in cup competitions.

As with most other teams, Anfield hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Sheffield United. The South Yorkshire side did however secure a rare win at this iconic venue in April 1994. Ian Rush had given Liverpool the lead inside the opening five minutes, but two second-half goals from Norwegian international Jostein Flo gave the visitors an unlikely yet precious victory on Merseyside.

Robbie Fowler and Steven Gerrard each scored in a 4-0 win for Liverpool in this fixture during the 2006/07 Premier League campaign. The Blades subsequently spent more than a decade away from the top flight until returning in 2019.

In January 2020, the Reds picked up a 2-0 victory over Sheffield Utd courtesy of goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané.
