The first-ever meeting between these clubs came in the 1894/95 season of the First Division, as Wolves claimed a 3-1 victory in this fixture. Just two years later Wolves faced Liverpool in an FA Cup tie, ending 2-0 in favour of WWFC.

The teams continued to meet regularly in the English top flight and less frequently in cup competitions.
