Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Aston Villa History

These are two of the oldest football clubs in England. They were each a founding member of the Football League in the late 19th century.

The first time Wolves and Aston Villa shared a pitch was in the Third Round of the 1886-87 FA Cup. They played out a 2-2 draw and as many as three replays were required for the teams to be separated. The Villans came out on top and they went on to capture a maiden FA Cup that season.

Looking at Wolves’ history, they were thrice crowned champions of the old First Division in the 1950s, including back-to-back triumphs at the end of the decade. The club has also won the FA Cup on four occasions, including in 1949 and 1960.

Wolves won a maiden League Cup in 1974 and lifted the trophy again in 1980. 2003 was another historic year at Molineux Stadium, with the club achieving promotion to the Premier League for the first time following a 19-year spell away from the English top flight.

Villa, themselves, have a respectable history to look back on. Seven times have the Villans been crowned champions of England, most recently in 1981. The following year, the Midlands club lifted the European Cup – precursor to the UEFA Champions League – and followed that up with victory over FC Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup.

In more recent years Villa have, for the most part, been a permanent fixture in the Premier League, minus three successive seasons in the EFL Championship until 2019.

Along with more than 130 on-field meetings, there have been a fair share of players who have donned the badges of both clubs over the years:

•Scotland striker-turned-commentator Andy Gray swapped one Midlands club for another when he moved from Villa Park to Wolves in 1979. The move was worth £1.5m – a record English transfer fee at the time.

• Ex-Republic of Ireland captain Robbie Keane signed for Wolves in 1996, shortly before his 16th birthday. His time at Molineux laid the foundations for a glittering career as a top striker, with spells at the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool. Keane would later join Villa in 2012, on loan from LA Galaxy, towards the twilight of his playing career.

• Joleon Lescott is another who emerged from the youth ranks at Wolves in the early 2000s. The former England defender spent most of his career in the Premier League and he moved to Villa ahead of the 2015/16 season.

• In 2022, Villa signed Belgium midfielder Leander Dendoncker from Wolves in a deal worth around £13m.

• In addition, legendary manager Graham Taylor had spells in charge of both these clubs. He had two separate spells at Villa Park (1987-1990; 2002-03) on either side of the 1994-95 season in which he was Wolves manager.
