Wolves vs Manchester City History

As two iconic English teams with a lengthy history, it’s not surprising that a number of individuals have represented both clubs.

Among those to do so are Irish winger Mark Kennedy, England centre-back Joelon Lescott, keeper Carlo Nash, defender Keith Curle and forward Robert Taylor.

Wolves vs Manchester City Head to Head

In the Premier League era, it would be fair to say that Manchester City have something of a stranglehold over Wolves, even when facing the West Midlands side in their own backyard, with home wins a rarity.

From their first Premier League meeting at Molineux in October 2003 to the close of 2022/23, Wolves have managed to beat Manchester City on just three occasions, one of those coming in that first encounter.

In that game, it took a solitary Colin Cameron goal to give Dave Jones’s side the win, and in October 2010, they repeated the feat with a hard-fought comeback win. This time it was Emmanuel Adebayor who gave Manchester City the lead from the spot on 23 minutes but Nenad Milijas and David Edwards helped Wolves to complete a 2-1 win.

The following season things didn’t pan out quite so well. The two teams met in the Carling Cup in October 2011, and though Milijas once again scored for Wolves, Roberto Mancini’s side came roaring back with goals from Adam Johnson, Samir Nasri a brace from Edin Dzeko, and a fifth from a Dorus De Vries own goal putting the home team to the sword, with Jamie O’Hara scoring a somewhat meaningless second.

Then in April 2012, Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri scored in a 2-0 win, and City went on to win the title for the first time in 44 years, famously doing so when the Argentine goal machine scored a last-ditch winner against QPR on the final day of the season.

In December 2019, Manchester City eased into a two-goal lead after 50 minutes, with Raheem Sterling scoring twice, but they did have keeper Ederson sent off early on, and Nuno Espirito Santo’s side fought back with goals from Adama Traore, Raul Jimenez, and Matt Doherty to secure a memorable 3-2 win.
